The national media declared Scott High School national football champions in 1916, 1919, 1922, and 1923. There is no doubt these Scott teams were powerhouses on the field. This rare picture of the entire 1916 team is part of our Toledo Public Schools archives. Nicknamed the Maroons prior to the Bulldogs, the team played foes as far away as Everett, Washington, and Marblehead, Massachusetts. Scott recorded 406 points against its opponents’ collective 18 in 1916, including a 57-0 win over rival Waite High School.
The 1919 Scott football team featured Richard Vick, brother of 1918 Scott graduate Ernie Vick, who was a track star and later played professional baseball. Coach William Neill led the school to additional national championships in both 1922 and 1923. In the 1923 game, Scott player Eddie Evans kicked a last-second field goal to defeat a team from Cedar Rapids, Iowa with a score of 24 to 21 to clinch the national title before a crowd of 20,000 that packed the stadium.
