The students from Scott High School and Ottawa Hills High School gathered at Hylant’s headquarters to work with Dr. Benson Cooke, Toledo native and professor of clincal psychology at the University of the District of Columbia.

Through a variety of interactive activities and thought-provoking discussion, students explored a deeper understanding of group dynamics, learned about forces that can shape their experience, ways to have greater control over their lives, learned effective communication skills, how to acquire knowledge and skills that lead to improving the human condition, and to see the commonalities of their experiences.

During one part of his presentation he shared, “Empowerment, therefore, represents a process reflecting a person's ability to pull from within themselves control, authority and influence that leads to a concrete action in their life."  Students walked away with a broader understanding of oneself and their relationship to each other and the community.

Beginning in 2020,  the partnership between Scott High School and Ottawa Hills High School, known as Home-to-Home, “offers the two schools and the Greater Toledo community a unique and powerful opportunity to carve a new path, build bridges, develop shared understandings, and continually create a partnership to build a common future.”

Special thanks to Bubba Berenzweig, Tom Siebenaler, Allison Garcia, and the Hylant Corporation for their incredible hospitality.

Thanks to Home-to-Home advisors Erica Silk, Nikki Tolliver, Deborah Sims, Joe Peterson, Carnel Smith, Latonia Reid, Nikayla Wright, Ben McMurray, and Ike Sims.

Home-to-Home would not be possible without the generous support of the Kadens Family Foundation for making these opportunities possible.  Shout out to Pete Kadens who challenged our schools to foster a deeper connection between our communities, forge a unique partnership, and capitalize on the strengths of both institutions.
