The employees of Toledo Public Schools are firm believers in trying to be good community partners, and at no time is that more evident than in the weeks leading up to the Christmas holiday break. Employees throughout the district are working to make the holidays brighter for those in need by answering the call from local organizations.
In support of the Salvation Army’s annual Hope for the Holidays campaign, TPS employees around the district again collected unwrapped toys that were donated on Friday, December 5th, during Channel 13abc’s annual drop off event. Dr. Romules Durant, CEO/Superintendent, and Scott High School Principal Treva Jeffries led the volunteers who unloaded the TPS donations. Students from Scott did double duty, with band members performing for the crowd and helping to unload the toys.

TPS employees and students were also among those who were part of last week’s efforts to collect $200,000 during the Old Newsboys Goodfellows Association’s Annual Paper Drive. Emilio Ramirez, a principal/mentor facilitator this year with TPS, is the first vice president of the Old Newsboys Association. Doing their part for the drive were the students and staff of Walbridge Elementary, who collected more than $502 for the Old Newsboys. Assistant Principal Monica Deberg-Peace reports, “This was done throughout this one week, which is an amazing feat for our students and families.”

But TPS employees don’t want to forget their furry friends. The district’s employees are collecting gently used towels, blankets, bedding, treats and toys for the dogs that are in the care of the Lucas County Canine Care & Control. Items for the four-legged friends are being collected through Friday, December 12th. Donations will be picked up from locations around the district the week of December 14th and delivered to the LCCC on Friday, December 19th. The list of wished-for-donations includes:
