The first class of Parent University has graduated, and now it's time for the spring classes.

New this school year, Parent University is a joint effort between Toledo Public Schools and Partners In Education to bring together community resources and leaders to offer FREE classes on a variety of topics.

The objectives for the fall semester were to engage Toledo-area parents as partners in education, support parents as leaders, advocates and life-long learners and inspire a culture that appreciates the importance of parents. There were 15 class topics, 39 individual dates and nine partnerships.

Approximately 80 individual parents and guardians attended Parent University classes, with each averaging three classes and many going to more than five. All classes were one to two hours and were held at various locations in Toledo.

The feedback was positive. "We all come from different backgrounds and life stories, but we came together without judgment and learned from each other and became a family," one parent said, while another noted, "We all have to work together - teachers, parents and the community."

And one participant simply said, "We all just want what is best for our children."

With those kind of sentiments, we can't wait to see what the spring semester brings.

There are two things to remember: childcare and transportation will always be provided and these classes are not meant to teach you how to parent, but rather, to support and celebrate the incredible job you are doing raising your children.
