Tyler Kirian, a junior at Start High School, was surprised recently when he was recognized as a Student of the Month for his work to end teen domestic violence.

Motivated by the murders of his best friend, Joscelyn Jones, and her  younger brother, Johnny Jones III, by her ex-boyfriend, Tyler met with his guidance counselor to ask how he could honor his friends' memory and help put an end to domestic violence.

They came up with a plan to hang up purple ribbons in the school and to paint the school rock purple to raise domestic violence awareness. (Purple has come to symbolize the issue). Tyler is also trying to organize a teen-run hotline as another resource for his classmates and other teens.

The Student of the Month honor was arranged by the law offices of Charles Boyk, a TPS Proud graduate of Start High School.
