Owens Community College’s Alumni Association -- in collaboration with Books-A-Million Inc., ten Directions Credit Union branches, two Great Lakes Credit Union branches and six Genoa Bank branches -- are bringing smiles to many area students this month through its Backpack to the Future campaign.
Through the program, 565 backpacks and 9,900 school supply items were collected in the summer months and are now being donated to 21 area elementary schools during the month of September.
Backpacks and school supplies were donated to seven Toledo Public Schools — Old West End Academy, Chase STEMM Academy, Sherman Elementary, Walbridge Elementary, Ella P. Stewart Academy for Girls, Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy for Boys and Longfellow Elementary. The gifts were presented Thursday, September 24, at Old West End Academy, 3131 Cambridge St.
In addition to backpacks, donors gave crayons, markers, bottles of glue, glue sticks, colored pencils, pencils, pink erasers, school boxes, pocket folders, marbled covered composition books and Kleenex tissues. The Backpack to the Future drive also collected more than $4,875 from community members that will be used to purchase more school supplies.
District administrators are very appreciative of this and other donations from community partners.
