With Start High School hosting a record number of foreign exchange students this year – nine from six countries – plans were hatched to formally welcome them to the school and the city of Toledo.

Senior Abelino Ruiz, along with Officer Abe Cruz, counselor Virgie Hamrick and principal Ed Perozek, was instrumental in making the arrangements for a welcoming dinner and reception that will be held in the cafeteria of the school, 2010 Tremainsville Rd., starting at 3 p.m. this Saturday afternoon. The meal will include dishes from the students' home countries and the table decorations are being created by students at the TPS Natural Science Technology Center.

Speakers will be U.S. District Judge Jack Zouhary, Toledo Public Schools CEO/Superintendent Dr. Romules Durant and Toledo Police Chief George Kral.

Of particular note is that two of the students – Majed and Mohamad Damalakhi – are Syrian refugees who have come to Toledo from Egypt. The other students and their home countries are:
Loay Alarab, Lebanon
Giacomo Benvegnu, Italy
Laura Sagolla, Germany
Enes Gerguz, Germany
Xiaoyan Li, China
Franka Etzel, Germany
Marius Rey-Mauzaize, France
