On June 12, 2014, Dr. Romules Durant, CEO/superintendent of Toledo Public Schools, held a news conference to announce that TPS and two delegate agencies had been awarded more than $8 million from the federal government to run most of the Head Start operation in Lucas County.

Since that time, Dr. Amy Allen, transformational leader for early childhood and special education, has worked hard to put together a staff and to expand the number of sites within TPS offering Head Start. Some staff members, like Roselyn Jackson, have been with Head Start for years. Others are newly minted college graduates hoping to make a difference in a young child's life.

Representatives of the two delegate agencies --  WSOS Community Action and the Lucas County Family and Children First Council -- have also been working hard.

In fact, TPS Head Start is currently looking for a high quality child care partner for the 2015-2016 school year. Applications were accepted through Monday, September 21.

Both Dr. Durant and Dr. Allen are convinced that starting to educate students when they are very young will help them be better prepared when they start kindergarten at TPS - and that success will help them on the path to being college and career ready when they graduate from TPS.
