At the start of June, fellow teachers at Navarre Elementary surprised Connie Guth with nearly $5000 for a family trip to New York City, a dream vacation for the teacher who is battling cancer.
On July 6, Ms. Guth sent pictures of the trip with the note, "Many teachers, parents and schools were involved in a fundraiser for my family and I to travel to New York this summer as I am currently undergoing treatment for Metastatic Breast Cancer. We had the time of our lives! Thank you to all of those involved, especially the students from Bowsher High School who went above and beyond!"
The money for the trip had been raised in secret, and Ms. Guth had been lured to a schoolwide assembly for what she thought was a presentation on a University of Toledo wellness program. Instead, she was greeted by a New York-themed performanceby the Bowsher High School choir and the news that the Bowsher students had raised more than $800 in addition to the teachers' efforts so Ms. Guth had extra spending money while on her trip.
