Registration is still underway for families who want to register their students to attend kindergarten in the fall at Toledo Public Schools.

Any child who turns 5 on or before September 30, 2015 is eligible to attend kindergarten this fall. (Children who have a birthday after the September 30th cutoff are encouraged to enroll in a TPS preschool or Head Start program and can call 419-671-9100 for more information).

To register a child for kindergarten, a parent or guardian should pick up a TPS enrollment packet from their neighborhood school or download and print out the forms here. Complete all paperwork in the packet and return to the Student Registration Office, Thurgood Marshall Building, 420 E. Manhattan Blvd., Room 211, Toledo, OH 43608.

Many students have already registered, thanks to the Discover TPS Kindergarten night held throughout the district on Thursday, May 7.

Parents attending the Old Orchard Elementary open house were greeted by Assistant Principal Aufwiedersehen Winfield and Principal Valerie Dreier.

“This is an exciting time to be a part of TPS,” Principal Dreier said. “We have so many people doing great programs. This gives parents the opportunity to come in and learn about all of the great things TPS has to offer.”

One such program parents learned about at the school is the ELEVATE Program, an after-school learning initiative that allows students to increase their engagement in education and develop positive learning and social habits in a fun environment. Tracee Perryman, executive director at the Center of Hope Family Services, helped start the program as part of her PhD work.

“The program is in its third year and has grown from the early pilot study and extensive initial research,” she said. “Funds from the 21st Century Community Learning Center allows us to develop a comprehensive program that promotes literacy enrichment, positive social skills, and nutrition education.”

Prospective students got to visit the kindergarten classrooms and meet the teachers. “This really helps students get acclimated to their learning environment and gives parents a chance to meet teachers and ask questions.”

After their journey through the school, families enjoyed a delicious home-cooked meal in the school’s cafeteria. Families also received passes to the Imagination Station.
