Bowsher High School last month hosted the You Be The Chemist Challenge for the state of Ohio with more than 2,000 students competing.

Nathan Shan, an 8th grader at Old Orchard Elementary, placed second in the competition. He will serve as the alternate in the national challenge being held in Philadelphia over the summer.

Nathan has been competing in this competition for the past three years. He and the district want to wish Daniel Liu of Ottawa Hills good luck in the national competition.

The You Be The Chemist Challenge® is a national academic contest that encourages students in grades 5-8 to explore important chemistry and STEM concepts and their real-world applications. The Challenge is a unique opportunity for a variety of community partners — including colleges and universities, businesses and community groups — to come together and show their support for STEM education.

Toledo Public Schools and the Chemical Educational Foundation would like to thank the following organizations for their support: The University of Toledo College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics; the Toledo Chapter of the American Chemical Society; NWO at Bowling Green State University; Palmer Holland; PVS Chemicals, Inc. and the Imagination Station.

Without these dedicated sponsors, students would not have the opportunity to compete.
