Dr. Jerome Pecko became the 29th Superintendent for Toledo Public Schools on August 1, 2010. A veteran educator, Dr. Pecko has an extensive background in the field of education. He has held a number of positions in the Summit County school districts – he was a junior high school teacher, an assistant principal at both a junior high and a high school, a principal of a middle school and then was the Superintendent of the Barberton City Schools and the Springfield Local Schools, in Summit County, Ohio.
Following his retirement from Springfield Local, Dr. Pecko went to work as an adjunct professor at the University of Akron in the Educational Leadership program. He worked closely with educators who were preparing for licensure as an Ohio school administrator. In this position, Dr. Pecko worked with students individually in their work environment and conducted classes that focused on topics related to school administration. During this time, Dr. Pecko found himself missing the work related to K-12 education, so when the position of Superintendent opened in Toledo, he applied.
Dr. Pecko participated in the Board of Education’s comprehensive interview process, and in the end was named as Superintendent. “I am both honored and excited to have been selected as the new Superintendent for Toledo Public Schools,” Dr. Pecko explained. “I look forward to working with the district’s students, staff and parents.” Board President Bob Vasquez is also excited to see Dr. Pecko at the helm. “I am impressed with his distinguished career and feel he possesses a true commitment to education,” Mr. Vasquez said. “Dr. Pecko is determined to build upon the district’s success in leading TPS into the future.”
Academic success for all students is Dr. Pecko’s number one priority. “My commitment is to work diligently with all administrators, teachers, and support staff to ensure that the programs and service we provide measure up to the highest of standards for each and every student.” Dr. Pecko’s goals include: improving the academic performance of students and individual schools, in particular underperforming schools; improving the district’s rating from the State of Ohio from Continuous Improvement to Effective, with a longer term goal of achieving a rating of Excellent; and finally, to maintain and improve the district’s graduation rate.
